Using all natural clay, the children pressed pine branches and made natural engravings to hang as wind chimes. They cut the clay into different sized shapes and strung twine through them to hang when they dried.
The biggest benefit of kids working with natural materials is that they engage all of the child’s senses. The smooth, wet and cold sensation of the clay sharply contracts to the more rough and prickly pine leaves. Both materials smell of fresh earth, and give off such strong scents that you can almost taste them.
Natural materials are a interesting change to the everyday art supplies kids use in the classroom, and these materials can be used in a more imaginative way. They encourage curiosity, inquirly, and a form of self-discovery as the children explore the different ways they can be used, and the multiple ways in interact with them.
